History

The group was founded in 1910 and has resided at its own Scout hut in High Street since the 1950s, when the old army barrack building was moved and erected by members of the group itself.

Some history has survived on the walls, a mural of a cub camp was painted by a leader of the 5th in the 60s. In the mural you can see the old uniform, the colour of the shirts. The 5th necker is a very unique one with it's orange 1/4inch border, as it was added to the scarf due to it being the same colour as the new scout shirts when the uniform changed in the 60s. As the scarf is so unique, it has become the talking point around many campsites.

The Arrowhead logo was painted on the wall of the hut in the late 80s by Leaders of 5th led by the late Geoff Simmonds. He was a motivating force for 5th (as GSL) and for the District HQ 's vision for Scouting heritage.

The group celebrated its centenery in 2010, and a group camp was organised at the district headquarters (Runway's End) to celebrate the event, along with a commemerative badge, which can be found below.
